Default Rear Axel Removal

I have a 2002 GT.

How difficult is it to get the axles out of the rear end. I have to replace the Axel bearings and seals on one side. It's been crunching and clicking for quite a while. Now there is gear lube on the inside of the wheel. I'm going to do both sides while I'm at it since the car has 106,000 miles on it. I never pulled the axles in a C-clip rear end before.

If the Axel is grooved from the bad bearings, is there a repair kit that will slide over the Axel surface that the bearing rides on (like a harmonic balancer repair sleeve)?

It's not too difficult. To get the c-clips out you have to remove the big pin thatgoes through the differential. Thatwill allow you to push in the axle. Push it in as far as it will go (I kicked the axle a few times to get it to go in)then you will be able to slide out the c-clip. Then just pull out the axle. Oh yea...don't forget to remove the wheel speed sensor before you push in the axle.

There's a bolt that holds that pin in. Its very tiny and easy to strip if you dont hose it down with brake cleaner and wipe it clean. Make sure you put some gear oil on the outside of the seal to get it to stick nice and If your axle is worn down(like mine were) either use an axle repair bearing(may leak, may not) or get a new axle. I had to go with the latter of the two suggestions. The repair bearings should be like 20 dollars at any auto store.

Once you get that bolt that holds the pin in place that 4.698GT wrote about, then it will slide right out. No punching or hammering required there.
Good luck!

Be prepared for some trouble. I assume you're planning on taking the bearings out with a slide hammer... mine didn't come out using a slide hammer they were stuck in there. I was replacing the gears and differential so i had the entire axle tube to work with. So to get the bearings out i put a 5 foot pipe through the entire axle tube and pounded it out with a sledge hammer.

Ooh, I hope it doesn't come to that.

If it does... oh well, the ring and pinion are making a little noise anyway.

Thanks for the heads-up.
