One other thing--the axle shaft just behind the ABS reluctor/wheel flange IS the inner race of the rear wheel bearings. Make sure you inspect the bearing surface and be prepared to get new axles if it's messed up--there may be repair sleeves and larger ID bearings available for the Ford 8.8" axle, IDK, but I wouldn't use 'em...
The bearings aren't on the axles...They are in the housing itself...and sometimes aPITA to remove..I've got a slide hammer with a special end to pull bearing like those.
so the housing thats on the axle comes off? if it does then why do i even need to remove the whole axle?
Once you pull out the axle...look at the end of the housing...there will be an Axle seal....Remove that and right behind it is the bearing..."in the housing"...
