Default Bad battery fried alternator??

Well yesterday I went to leave work, and my battery was dead, or close to it, so I had to get a jump. I noticed that the day before it cranked over slower than usual and figured a new battery was in my near future. But anyways I got jumped and drive home through traffic for about 30-40 mins, almost home and my alternator takes a dump as I'm on the highway, so the car is barely running off what is left on the bad battery. It happened so fast when it fried that everything almost shut off as I drove, radio, and gauges. I managed to call a buddy and swapped out a good battery to limp it home so I could change the Alternator, but just wondering if anyone has had this happen to them, I mean I have never had an alternator crap out because of a dead battery before.

Ur alternator is what recharges your battery....if ur battery is dead or close to it and doesnt hold charge anymore it over works your alternator and it dies!

either that or the battery was fine but your alternator was slowly dying and draining your battering till your alternator finally went....

It's not that it over works the alternator and burns it up. If a battery fails by shorting internally, it removes the resistance from the circuit (the battery is the main resistor in your electrical system). Remove the resistor and the alternator will burn up due to the increased current (not load).
