Cold Startup Sputter/Leak sound? 2004 GT 5 speed.
2004 GT 5 speed with 31K miles (Factory warranty still).
MGW STS, Flow Weld in's Mac's H pipe SCT 93 oct Tune, I'm having a problem I have yet to figure out, I've thought that it was an exhaust leak yet it only happens on cold startups and no other time. I've had the exhaust checked out and realigned many times. once the car is warmed up and turned back on it does not make the sputtering/leak type of sound (Imagine pressing your lips together and blowing so they flap) well that's the sound I'm getting. Whenever I start up the car in the morning or after work or after an hour or more of it being off/cooled I get this sound sometimes louder then others. seems to be coming from the engine bay but I have yet to pin point it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm lost and would like to figure out what it is before heading to the dealership (I don't want it to be because of an aftermarket part.) TIA Frank |

well if it sounds like something flapping and you can't find a leak, it could probably be a loose baffle or somethinginside one of your flowbastards. i'm starting to hear something similar on mine too [:@]

be more specific. is it just the intial start up or does the sound continue until its warm?

RE: Cold Startup Sputter/Leak sound? 2004 GT 5 speed.
Only on intial start up any every time you start it until it's warmed up. Adam you have the same set up as me (unless it's a BBK H) do you have this sound? I was told " If it is only during the inital first big REV, I would say it is the reverb of the flows echoing through the h-pipe." could this be my problem? how about "Could it be a crack in your exhuast manifold. Did you check that out? It sounds like it stops when the car warms up. If the crack is small, it will almost seal when the metal heats up and expands and that's why it goes away." or "Could be a stuck EGR...or make sure you are using the right oil in there...if its more of a valve noise, change your oil." Sorry I'm getting help with some local mustang guys aswell but no one seems to have the same problem/answer |
RE: Cold Startup Sputter/Leak sound? 2004 GT 5 speed.
P.S I've only had the flow 40's about 3 months and I know it's coming from under the hood area

if it sounds like it's coming from under the hood, the first place i would look is the manifold/midpipe connection. have you checked those bolts yet?

RE: Cold Startup Sputter/Leak sound? 2004 GT 5 speed.
the mid pipe has been re aligned more then 5 times and does not leak (Atleast I can't find it or even an exhaust shop)
