Default Crap *** Rack and Pinion

Has anyone ever worked on these things or is it a replacement job. I noticed as I pulled into the garage power steering fluid leaking out of the drivers side boot that is on the rack and pinion...... any suggestions on how to fix this???!!!

They're rebuildable, but most guys just replace them. I'm new to Mustangs, but the rack appears to be very easy to replace on these cars. Cost might be another thing though. I'd bet $350 or so for a new one, but I haven't checked. Guess I'm talkin out my ****!

The rack is very easy to remove. Just remove the tie rod ends, the steering column and then it's 2 bolts.

+1 on being real easy. It's definetly the easiest rack I've ever done. You can buy them rebuilt for around $200 at Advance.

You could jack up the front end so the wheels are off of the ground and turn the wheel slowly side to side to bleed out the air. Or do what most techs do and just start it and shut it off real quick. After both of those you should top it off and do it again until it's full and no more air is in the lines.

Well I got it all in and did the front springs while I was there, everything went smooth, really easy install of the rack and pinion, hardest part was messing with the teflon o rings for the lines...

Can't wait to get it back on the ground and see how it sits with the new springs... I'll finish up the back and change the oil tomorrow and try and post up some pics...

Ensure that you get the verified replacement rack assembly if you purchase the complete unit. Ford dealers have been known to substitute the V6 rack in lieu of the GT rack. While they look the same and are interchangeable, the GT has the tighter steering wheel roation from stop to stop than the V6 version or at least used to according to a Ford Service Manager I know.
