Default cost of gear install

i just ended up paying over $800 for gears and install. i bout motive 3.90's off a buddy who never used them for $60, took them to the shop, had to get all new bearings cuz they were shot. cost me $390 total for that trip, and my car was in the shop for 1 week. had the car for 2 days, and the gears where wining really bad so i took it back. he had it for 2 weeks, then called me and said the gears were no good, cuz he shimmed them wrong the first time, so i ended up paying $240 for a brand new set, because i had no way of proving that he screwed them up, then another $40 for all new shims, plus labor once again for the install, plus my car being in the shop for another week and a half. 4 and a half weeks, and $800+ later i finally have my 3.90's in and running right. anybody else ever sink that much into gears, or did i definately take it to the wrong guy???

I bought mine for 190 shipped off of here, brand new Motive 3.90's with a new bearing/shim kit with royal purple fluid, and paid a very reputable guy $60 for the install

Dude you got ripped off, I would have punched that dude in the face if he made me pay him twice b/c he sucks ***** at what he does. I bought gears and tuner for $400 and paid $150 for install, I got lucky.

I forget exactly how much I paid... it was alittle under $160 for the gears& bearings installed.

He must have really botched the install, because you can be a little bit off & not ruin the gears when you go to fix them. You got raped & the guy should have ate the new set of gears...

Sounds like a shoddy mechanic. Take it as a lesson learned & never go back to him. Find a performance shop next time. Many people pay 600+ for gear installs, so you didn't get it that bad...

The performance shop I use charges 3-4 hours labour for a gear install (around $200).
