Changed gears, Help/Question
A friend and I changed the rear gears today in my car from 4.10s to 3.73s. A shop orgianlly put in the 4.10s, but I did the 3.73s on my own today.
It took about 3 hours, and I had never opened the rear end on a car before. The hardest and most time consuming part was removing the C clips to get the axels out. There is a "S" shaped locker in there that I had to work around to get them out.
How are you suppose to go about that step? Is there a special tool to use? I popped it off one axel, and got the c clip off the opposite axel. It took over an hour to get those clips off and the axels out.
Putting it back together was a breeze, used Ford Racing gears, and the same thickness pinion shim. Backlash is at 9, and the car runs smooth.
Theres a slight whine when slowing down while in gear with the clutch out that wasnt there before. Its not loud, but its there. This time, I replaced all the bearings in the rear of the car. That wasnt done with the 4.10s. Could it be the bearings whining? I set the preload on the pinion bearing right at 19/20.

RE: Changed gears, Help/Question
SO I found out I should have taken out the ABS sensors, and I could slide the axels in further.
I have a horrible whining noise now though when Im "engine breaking", or slowing down while im in gear.Any ideas?

RE: Changed gears, Help/Question
I had the same problem when a shop did mine. I took it someplace else and they said that the other shop didn't shim it correctly. I went from stock to 3.73s. From what I have read and this shop told me, you have to get the gears in perfect and sometimes have to shim them, if they are not in correctly you will get that whine.

RE: Changed gears, Help/Question
Backlash is ok from .008-.015 but I've heard the best backlash to have is smack in the middle, not too loose not too tight. I set my backlash at .012 and ive had no whine whatsoever (used FRPP 4.10s). And also, that torque on the preload bearing was on a new bearing crush collar or a used one? On a used bearing crush collar its 8-14 inch lbs (not foot pounds) and on a new bearing its 16-29 inch lbs.
