Default ECM swap question from auto to 5spd.

Does the engine computer tell when the tranny shifts or does it just relay info to another computer for the tranny? I ask because I have a 5spd car and wanna put in a new engine. If I get a newer engine with it's computer that's made for an auto will I be throwing codes or have any driveability problems or what?

Default RE: ECM swap question from auto to 5spd.

I think you would have problems with the computer. A computer for an auto would try to shift the tranny at the designated rpm. I read somewhere a while back that someone actually deactivated the shifts on a auto computer to make it work with a 5 speed. I don't think it's very cost effective though. The cost of a 5 speed computer is not very expensive. I bought a computer off ebay for my car for less than $25. All you would have to then is to take the car to a ford technician to reflash your security system so that your car would start.
