Im having the same problem in my 03. I changed the fluid to RP Synchromax and lowered it to 3.25 quarts. Its much better but I still need to buy the kit. Anyways, when I have the kit done, would it be ok to run the Synchromax again?

Posting to subscribe to this thread. I may end up having to buy the full kit, but hopefully this will suffice. I know my third is being goofy too. =\

Well, I'm glad I lost a bit of fluid when my shifter came loose then [8D]I've got the second gear grind, only when I'm being hard on it though... I usually just baby the 1-2 shift because of this. Newest development, reverse grinds extremely bad? I've got to be at 100% of a stop, and have to hold the clutch for a few seconds to get the input shaft to come to a complete stop otherwise GRINDDDDD when I try to put it into reverse. Sigh. I'm just going to save for a full rebuild kit. I've admittedly abused the thing (but never reverse...?) and it could use a refresh.

To add, if anyone is concerned about oiliing with lower fluid... you don't need to worry. When my shifter came loose, I was getting on it, shifted from first to second, fairly hard. Right after the shift, I saw a big cloud of white smoke behind the car... I thought I blew it up, I wasn't even on spray! I babyed it a bit, the smoke went away. Went WOT with no shift in second, and no smoke, and now I'm confused. Tried WOT in second again, shifted into third... white smoke again.

The smoke was from the transmission fluid spilling out of the TOP of the transmission, coming out from under the loose shifter, dripping down the sides, landing on the exhaust, and burning. The shifter was barely loose, and plenty of fluid came out on the shifts... needless to say, don't worry! The fluid is flying around in there so much, everything is covered.

I have that some problem with reverse. Is a complete rebuild the only solution or is there another way to fix it?
