Default Rear end clunk

My 99 gt has a pretty noticible clunk coming form the rear end when I put it into gear. If i am at a dead stop and put it into first the rear end will clunk. Other times it is when I am just accelerating from a light. The car has about 60,000 miles on it, I am not sure of the service history on it because I got it through the dealership I work at. Am I dealing with something that is common and should just be ignored or should I look into this more? Thanks in advance

i get the same thing sometimes. i am not sure what it is. i have been down there a under the car a few times everything is tight. wouldn't hurt to check ur's. I think it is just alittle play in the system. oh well if mine goes ford gets the bill.

mine has been doing that since i bought the car a year ago... i dont think anything is wrong with it because mine is still ok... its just a clunk sound that happens sometimes... pretty often in my case.... no biggy. i think that its the rear end locking up or something like that. but i really dont think its a problem

What you both described indicates rear universal joint wearing. If you chose to replace it, buy one thats greaseable at Napa (or equiv) with zerk fittings.

That doesn't mean it's whats wearing in your cars, but it's the first stop. Leave the car in gear, crawl under, and rotate the driveshaft back and forth and watch the bushings in the universal joint for play.

Just thought of something else, if it's not the u-joint, its the fluid in the rear end.. make sure you get the ford posi stuff, special additives for our rear ends... (okay, TMI)

I have the same problem I have an 03 GT with 24k on it. I hear the same clunking noise in the rear at random times. I test drove two other GTs before I bought mine 3 months ago both with about 17k on them they both made the same noise in the rear when I test drove them one more frequent then the others. Its so wierd you would think it would do it on all three of them, with such few miles. I had the dealer put each of the cars on the lift check everything, nothing was wrong. the only thing I wondered was that when it was in gear with the e-brake on there seemed to be alot of play in the drive shaft like an 1/8 turn. mabye to much play in the ring and pinion, from the factory. I dont know, just a thought.

To set things straight...

The rear end clunk is almost always caused by excessive lash between the Ring and Pinion gear. Ford is bad about having these out of spec on even new cars. If you are under warranty have this thing check out as it will only get worse.
