Question about H-pipe gasket, exhaust gaskets in general...
OK here's the deal. When I put the new heads/intake on my car I need to replace the gasket that goes between the H-pipe head pipe and exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the car. I've looked around for it online and the going rate is between $15-$20, which IMO is freakin' ridiculous for a damn gasket. My question is this, for those of you who might have experience with gasket materials. If I were to buy a small sheet of copper at a hardware store and cut out a pattern (I have a template) would the copper compress enough to allow a good seal? The thing about the "official" gasket is that it has a crush seal (see the picture) around where the exhaust gas moves through it, and if i were to use a sheet of copper it wouldn't have that seal, but I guess I could just double up a ring of copper around the hole and maybe that would work? I'll spend the money and get the gasket if there's no other way, but if I can get by spending only $5 or less instead I'll do that. BTW the permatex sealant won't work because it can't withstand the high temperatures of the exhaust so using that as a seal ring isn't an option. Does anyone know about this?

I just reused the old one as a temporary fix because I couldn't find a new one. When I got it together, to my surprise, No leaks. You may not be this lucky though. I'd just order the new one. I know that the next time my midpipe comes off, a new gasket's goin in. Actually, the next time my midpipe comes off Long tubes are going on. =)

Well I would reuse my old one but half of it was just gone so there was a really bad exhaust leak. I really don't know why Ford didn't just make the passenger side manifold like the driver side manifold with the ball connector so we wouldn't need a gasket at all.

I have the old one lying on the floor in my garage from when I changed out my midpipe a few weeks ago (yes I need to clean my garage I know)... I think it's in decent shape... let me know if you want it.
