Default Timing jumped on me...

Tried the pi cam swap, apparently the cam gear moved on the first cam during swap or somthing idk. The car soundsfunnyat idle so im guessing its timing.I didn't noticed until we had the cam bolted down to the cam gear. I guess i was to excited that i was finally getting it done.Wellwhat are my options? The car runs but im scared to drive it but im gonna try in a lil while. What is a ballpark cost for retiming and cam install? Just retiming? Cobraengine swap? My mechanic said he was going to do it but then backed out bout 2 hours ago because he said only a ford dealership would be able to fix it if it is the timing. Just need some help guys. I feel like a moron :/.

You probably skipped a tooth on the timing chain on one of the cams. All you need to do is reinstall the timing chains correctly, and you should be fine.

If not, its another problem.

If you skipped even one tooth you could have PTV contact and be screwed. Didn't you take the timing cover off to do the install?

+1. I skipped a tooth on the passenger side head when I did my PI swap. I had to buy new valves because one was bent. You're going to have to take the timing cover off and reset the timing and pray that none of the valves are bent. If they are, you're going to have to pull the head and replace the valves. If you have the timing cover off, I suggest you pull the head just to be safe. It's not much more work after you have the timing cover off. Good luck and I hope it works out! [sm=smiley20.gif]

Yeah when I did my swap I had PTV contact and had to tear it back apart and got new valves put in and had to clean up two pistons buy they barely touched and had my heads shaved because i didnt torque them down right. Its all good now! I was such newb back then.

The chain never popped off the timing gear. I made an idiot mistake of turning the crank pulley to line up the cam and timing gear because it was hard to push down the cam because a lobe was straight down on a spring. When i noticed i was not on tdc i realized what i did put the old cam back in and turned the crank 2 times. No noises or contact. Thought i was good, turned the car on and it idles high, no throttle resposne and rides ruff.

Mechanic said only a dealer could fix it... But before he said he figured that out his price quote for the job was already well over $1,000. I think that is very high for re-timing. Anyone know of a write-up for re-timing? What is needed for a pi motor swap.
