Wierd noise at idle.

Wierd noise at idle.
when i start my car i get a pretty bad rattling noise, chills out after a few seconds. it quiets down but its still there. it almost sounds like a diesel engine idling (not nearly as loud or anything, but a constant clacking). it goes away after about 1500-2000rpm driving, and goes to almost nothing once i drive it then park. friend said maybe one of the pulleys is off, i just got the car and they replaced the belt so that could be a possibility? i realize this will be a hard question to answer without seeing the car. reading stuff about camshafts grinding and stuff like that and its flipping me out, i really dont want/cant afford rebuilding this damn motor right now.

Busted cat? Kinda sounds like my problem....if you ever get under the car, hit the exhaust with the palm of your hand. Be sure to use a wet folded up towel if the car is still hot. If you hear any rattling, follow it to the source...hit the cats a few times, if you have them.

Depending on your cat-back, the O/R mid-pipe will have a tinny rattle to it & just make things more complicated.
Take a long screw driver while your engine is running & place it to various parts of the engine with it to your ear.If you can't pin-point the noise, start looking under the car...
If you have an aftermarket cat-back, look at all the hangers. Some hangers have set-screws in them that come loose & let the hanger rattle on the exhaust tips at low RPM's.
