Default rear end gear install

I just installed Motive 3.73 gears in my 02 gt...I installed them myself with the backlash set at .006 on an inch. I hear a small whining when i decelerate in 3rd and 4th...It just hums a little, i dont hear any clicks, grinds, or clangs. Anyone have any advice?

From what I have heard...Motive Gears almost always whine even installed by a Professional.

My 03 Auto with stock gears has a very slight whine, you can barely hear it, from say 40mph to 30mph on decel.
If you ever so lightly touch the gas pedal it goes away.
It's just the nature of the beast I think.

When I was test driving S197s before I bought my 2003 Vert, I would say about 1/2 of them had some kind of gear whine and these were brand new cars.
Also some people are very sensitive toward gear whine and others don't even hear it.
Kind of like o/r pipes [8D]

Backlash might be too tight. I think its supposed to be .008-.015 People have installed motives with no issues, I doubt its the gear set.

Nope....I have no WHINE.....
correct...backlash should be .008 to .010...max....What about pinion depth?Gotta check that to,,,can't just install the oldpinion shim and expect it to be right...Slight whine...should be fine for awhile....

Pinion depth might be the culprit. I haven't done gears in long enough that I've forgotten wheich way it is, but too deep causes whine on decel and too shallow causes whine on accel. At least that's my experience.

I recently had Motive 3.90s installed by a reputable local shop and they have a slight whine on decel as well. It's light enough that I figure it's fine. If the guy were to try to fix it, I'd probably end up with whine on accel or at cruise as a tradeoff. I'm leavin it alone.
