Priming Oil Pump

Installing the forged block soon and wanted some tips and advice regarding priming the oil pump. As this is a crank driven oil pump, do I just trun the crank by hand? Can I do it on the stand or does the engine have to be in the car? If there is a post detailing this procedure please tell me. Thanks.

RE: Priming Oil Pump

When the engine is built they put oil on the bearings and cylinder walls. Just fill the motor with oil and start it up. The oil pump on a 4.6 is mounted to the crankshaft anyway. It doesn't matter if you turn it over by hand or with the starter it's still going to take the same amount of time to get the engine primed anyway.

When I dropped my engine back in I disconnected the injectors and COPs and let the starter crank it over for a little bit.

Use this setup and use the oil sending unit to plumb in the oil.

I used this idea when I replaced the engine in my daughters Buick. It also has the georotor pump and it is next to impossible to prime by using the starter.
