yeah look into an SN95 Cobra... unless you're mechanically inclined and know how to take apart a motor... its going to cost alot (labor) to make it faster. unlike me i love cars and my dad know how to do everything to a car so he helps me install parts... and i love the SN95 more than the new edge. no offense , i do love the new edges!

You could get the 5.0 in the SN-95 body style. BUT....If you are going to go down to those years (94-95 right?)Then spend just a bit more and get the cobra. That was one of my mistakes when I bought my mustang. It was my first Stang and I just wanted one not really caring what it was. If this is you, then take a step back and see what it is you really want. If you want to go not forced induction (f/i), then go with the 5.0's. The parts for them seem to be getting cheaper by the week and they take well to that kind of stuff. My buddy has a fox body that is running 600+ HP on a N/A motor. Now, if you don't want to toy with the engine and just leave it stock, the shop around for a while and find yourself a nice Cobra in the body style you like. Cobras are fast. Not much else to say. If you don't want to modify it all that much, that's the way to go. And you'll have the pride of drive one.
I guess all I'm saying is make sure your first purchase for these cars is the right one. You see A LOT of people here that get their sn-95 gt's and end up selling them because it wasn't the right car for them. Just make the educated decision and you'll never look back. Have fun!

Mods are basically useless on any 4.6L sohc engine. waste of money for hardly any gains. Unless it's superhcarged then you will see descent gains with a sohc as all gt's from 96-04 are sohc (single overhead cam) Cobra's and mach's respond well to any mod because they are dohc. For example..an Accufabthrottle body that costs $349 bolted to an '03 Cobra will see gains upwards of 20+hp. Bolt an Accufab throttle body for $349 to a gt motor and you'll barley get 6hp. Get a 5.0L 94-95 or a foxbody pre-94. Also with emissions depending where you live, OBDII is 1996 and up and have stiffer emissions inspections. Atleast here in NYS. I have to plug my car into DMV and pass a computer scan! I have a 97gt and with the stock motor it took me ffffforeverrrrr to get up to 138mph foot to the floor. Like 3 miles. I could've had an icream cone eaten before I got up to speed.I swapped in a 96 cobra motor and hit 140 in seconds! Ice cream wouldn't have even melted...lol Do yourself a favor.....Go buy a GM...lol

I'm REALLY not trying to dog anyone in particular here, but if you created a thread full of questions, would you really want the response to be in ONE GIANT paragraph?...lol.
To the new guy though, *original poster* you need to think about what you want out of your car to begin with. If you are thinking big numbers down the road, then go with a 5.0 from 94-95, though it will be slightly less reliable than a newer GT due to age and mileage *likely high mileage, though not certain*.
If you're just looking for something fun to drive that you can throw an exhuast on and have fun as a daily driver, there is NOTHING wrong with a 96-98 4.6. Sure, they're slow, but if it's just for fun DD then do you really want to go fast? Note though: if you choose this route, make sure you're not going to want to go fast later cause it'll cost you. These cars can be had for awfully cheap, but take about 2-3K just to match a new edge with the PI swap and such.
Depending on how much money you have, you could look into a 99-04GT. Prices range from a fair 8K for a early model with fair mileage, to the attempted dealer raping at 16-17,000 for a practically new '04.
And as has been said a few times already, if you still want daily driver fun but have a slightly higher goal, look into a 96-99 Cobra. 99's are a bit different with their IRS, and slighty changed engine, but essentially they both have the same limits and potential.
Peformance is all over the place. 94-94 5.0's are in the 15 flat to mid 15's depending on transmission/body style.
96-98's are just a tick or two behind that.
99-04 GT's are advertised 14.1-14.3 or so, expect mid 14's your first few times out.
96-98 Cobras are a few clicks in front of a 99-04 GT, and only a gear swap and DR's away from low 13's.
99 Cobras are the fastest stock, but IRS can be a bish.
Good luck though man, explore the forums, listen to what people have to say and just think things through. Like a member posted above, 'some' people jump right into a nice find, and then regret it, not because it's not fun, but they have to throw the price of the car itself just to get into the 12's.
