Default Intake Manifold

I bought the Typhoon Intake Manifold with C&L RPM series upper plenum and Professional Products throttle body from RPMOutlet.com as a kit. Yesterday, I was having them installed by a respectable shop and everything seemed to be going well. When we turned on the car, however, they said that they noticed some leaks in the system, and after five minutes of idle, the intake plenum suddenly cracked.

I don't know how this could have happened, but according to the shop, they said that the leaks caused uneven pressure build up, and that eventually caused the plenum to crack. They said the leaks are caused by the poor manufacturing of the Typhoon, bacause they have installed three of these before, and had problems with two of them.

What do you guys think? Has anybody ever heard of anything ever happening like this? I was surprized to hear that it happened, especially because Typhoon is a commonly used manifold. Could the shop have done something different to avoid this from ever happening?

The shop is going to try and weld up the crack in the plenum for now, so they're hoping that its going to work for now.

Any help would be appreciated.

I've never heard of leaking/bad intakes from Typhoon. Sounds like the shop is covering their a$$. I'd call Typhoon and talk to someone. I know I wouldn't want to drive around with a patch job on my intake manifold.

It sounds like the shop bolted down a poorly manufactured piece of crap and the stress provided by the uneven mating surfaces caused the part/s to break.
The leaks were probably caused by the uneven gasket surfaces not sealing.
Another reason to "Buy American"!

Shops needs to be buying you a new intake manifold.
If that has happened to 2 of the 3 that they have done, they arent doing something right.

The shop is welding the plenum this morning, and what I plan on doing is getting a replacement plenum (like Accufab or Professional Products) soon after the dyno tune. It's my only car, so I need it back pretty soon.

I put a Typhoon and BBK in myself on my '99 GTin January. The car had 91,000 miles on it. I striclty followed the directions, including the torque sequence. This is critical. Since I had everything apart already, I replaced all hoses and gaskets. It took me 6 hours, but I'm no mechanic and I had never worked on a 4.6 mod motor. The Typhoon has worked out great for me. I've put 8,000 miles on the car and no problems.

First off he siad UPPER PLENUM CRACKED not the INTAKE!!!! My guess is the garage either over torqued the plenum or istalled it crooked somehow, maybe something was stuck in there? I do know the EGR tube is a pain in the *** and does put stress on the plenum if not bent properly!
Your Typhoon intake is fine though right? Ohh, leaks are THEIR fault!

Modular Powerhouse has had a few problems with the Typhoon Intake and its poor quality and leaks...they even posted some pics on their forum. I wouldn't use a Typhoon product if it was free.

C&L on the other hand is a reputable company with quality products so their plenum shouldn't have been defective. Mine was top quality...maybe they did tighten it down too much.
