Just reading a post on gas octane and remember some guy telling me that it is harmful to run higher octane gas thean recommended. I usuallly run 91 in my car but he tried telleng me that it can harm parts of the engine. Is this true and does it make any difference in performance

No it does not make a performance difference. The octane rating just reduces the chance of dentonation. Basically the higher the octane the harder it is to ignite and the less prone to detonation it is. High octane is recommended for high compression motors and forced induction.</P>

Can higher octane damage a car? Yes. If your car is say a buick or a honda. (I say buick because I worked with a service manager for buick and this was a commen occurance). Basically the motors spark has trouble making enough heat (spark) to ingnite the fuel The fuel may not completely burn fast enough and may enter the exhaust system and damage your cats. You will know if this is happening because the exhaust of the car smells horriable<IMG src=smileys/smiley11.gif border="0">. you will be able to smell it when you fill-up with gas. It lingers that long. </P>

I run 93 and 94 in my stock 03 GT. I have had zero problems and I won't and you won't either. The motor is capable of burning that octane. Now can your pocket handle the burn? LOL<IMG src=smileys/smiley17.gif border="0"></P>

Why thank you mdvaldosta. I have asked this question in the past when I first started to learn about cars and researched it. That is basically what happens. Cars are awsome to learn about!

I used, 93 in my '02 GT from the day I bought it until a couple months ago. Here's why: 1) Everything I have purchased for my car has NOT been put on yet. I plan on doing everything over the winter, so I am still driving it stock at the moment. 2) It seemed that my car was having rather hard starts when I was running premium. It even seemed to not run as smooth. I did not realize this until I decided to try regular for the he** of it. Personally, I noticed a big difference in a positive way w/the lower octane. However, this time next year I'll be back to premium, cuz after all my mods are put on, I'll have the chip programmed to run on premium. Just my $.02

Run Sunoco gt 104, unless you cant get your hands on it... Makes car go faster, and who cares if it breaks, that just means you need to get better parts to make your car go even faster

What the f**k kind of stupid thing is that to say?? Holy s**t! Sorry if I offend anybody, but that is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. Higher octane only makes your car go faster if your compression is high and you have detonation problems. Who cares if it breaks?? How about the person with the broken car? Running your car into the ground is just a bad idea, especially on purpose. You obviously don't view the machine from a performance standpoint. Given the price of high octane fuel, it's really foolish to tell people they need what they really don't. You must be a salesman...<IMG src=smileys/smiley11.gif border="0"></P><edited><editID>USAMuscle</editID><editDate>37938.2489930556</editDate></edited>
