tuned for 91 octane, 93 octane, etc?

RE: tuned for 91 octane, 93 octane, etc?
A tune for specific octane is mostly a function of ignition spark advance. As you advance ingnition timing you increase the chances of detonation which is the premature combustion of the fuel/air mixture. This could lead to the damaging of vital internal parts. In order to combat this you need to increase the octane rating of the fuel you use. The higher the octane the more resistant the fuel is to premature detonation and the more timing you can run. IIRC the max advance you can get away with on 93 is 15 or 16 degrees.
The primary advantage of advanced timing is more power. With a good 93 octane tune you can see decent gains. If you don't have a tune/advanced timing there is no reason at all to run 91 or 93 in your car.

If your car was stock when u bought itmeaning no bolt ons or exhaust u probably have no tune.U also can check your computer in the kick panel(i think thats what they call it)to c if u have a chip in the bottom of it.If u haveno tune u wont c any gains from 87 to 93(maybe 2hp if that)

yea its not worth the dough if you dont have it tuned by a performance chip.
- i mean if your car has been use to the high levels of octane for so long i guess i'd keep it the same but i mean unless otherwise dont even bother

An easy way to tell if you have a tune since you have 3.73 gears is to find out if your speedo is correct. If it is then make sure you have 3.73 gears first and look to see if you have a speed cal under your center counsel. If not you more then likely have a tune. Just step down fuel levels and drive it till you get to 87 octaneand don't hear any pinging.

Strike that, forget you ever read that, that has to be the dumbest things I've heard in refrence to octane levels.

i concur. Octane rating is the fuel's resistance to igniting,so you run a higher octane to prevent detonation due to advanced timing.
