18s hinder performance?
Evening folks..
I was wondering if 18 inch tires would hinder performance at all? I was looking into getting a new set of rims(retro bullit or FR500) but the stock 17 inch seems a bit small to me..My concern was mostly if 18s would hinder my GT's performance. I don't know much about tired and wheels period so if you can give me some info on you know...tire size, what springs i should be looking at...i appreciate it guys.

As long as you match the total wheel size, the only bad thing would be the added weight... Chrome will add weight, but the fr500's shouldn't be THAT much heavier than stock. I say go for it.

RE: 18s hinder performance?
just make your 18 inch wheel and tire the same height as the 17in wheel and tire. example- if you have 245/45/17 get some 245/30/18. Im not sure what the exact measurements are, but look into it. The middle number is sidewall height. so if u go bigger with the rim just drop the sidewall height and you will be fine.

yes larger wheels will hurt your performance since the mass is further from the axis. there is more rotational inertia, ie the wheel is harder to spin because the mass is further from the center.

the only performance problem you would have is added weight from chrome rims (i.e. saleen triple chrome plated) the added weight would be barely noticeable unless your a pro dragracer. as long as you dont increase the overal tire size youll be fine.

Tire size calculator: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
Go to this site. You plug in your current tire dimensions and the proposed replacement's and it will tell you how much bigger or smaller they are from current.
Slick, huh?

I Have a 03' stang with a 5 speed that i have owned for about a year. When i bought it i used to spin the tires off the line with the 17's which caused low et times .However,a change to 18's and better tires solved that problem. After the swap i installed eibach drag launch springs and helped a lot more as far as traction goes. The tires on the rear are nitto drags 285 35's wraped around ford cobra wheels to make a nice package.

I really don't agree with you because i took off more than a 1 sec off et times are concerned. If you like to street race or go to the track you need bigger tires. IF not outlaw racing class would not use 26's or 28's.
