If you can put your car's rear end in the air, here's a way to tell what gears you have:

Mark a point on your car's tire and the drive shaft. Turn the drive shaft and count how many times it goes around before the wheel makes one revolution. If it goes around about four times, you probably have 4.10 gears in there. About 3 3/4, you have 3.73. That'll at least tell you what gears you have.
i was just about to say that! but thats how you would figure out which one is reading correctly :P

I've seen big tachs before, but holy crap 5'.....hope is doesn't have a shift light b/c something that big could give you flash burn!
Hahaha, nice.

Sorry I can't help with your problem though. Only thing I could think of is that the wiring on the aftermarket tach must me messed up.

Have you tried the digital tack yet? just wondering if thats the same too. It might just be the needle.

You can always bounce that sucker off the rev limiter and see which one is right

I am not endorsing this method of finding out BTW.
