two reasons:
1.) engine braking, saves your brakes in less than 40 mph traffic.
2.) driving at the bottom of overdrive which if you are just cruising will shift into it around 40 mph will reduce tranny life. I can think of three people i know with all different cars that had the problem with tranny clutches from driving around at low rpms going from third to O/D constantly.
yea it reduces fuel milage so if you think that is more important then do what you want. its not that bad if you only do city driving occationally. Do what you feel is right.

So I should keep the o/d off while driving around town to increase trans life? Wouldnt it wear the trans clutch because its riding it the whole time in the city. Where I live its constant stop and go, a lot of lights, stop signs and traffic. So keeping the o/d off is a good idea?

RE: OVERDRIVE ON/OFF AUTOMATIC GT
i think all this talk about tranny damage from o/d being on is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. before my mustang i had a silverado with 98K hard working miles on it and i never used to turn o/d off. i serviced it regulary and it never gave meany problems

RE: OVERDRIVE ON/OFF AUTOMATIC GT
all o/d is, is the 4th gear,
when ur going about 45 or so turn it right before a race so it will down shift and you will be at about 4000 rpm's ready to jet!
then turn it back on at about 5100

Acually you should do some research before making yourself look foolish. They put the overdrive button on the car for a reason right? And people post forums to find things out, so how is that making people look foolish?

RE: OVERDRIVE ON/OFF AUTOMATIC GT
jesus christ this is rediculous, OVERDRIVE IS 4th GEAR. NOTHING MORE.
You have a 4-speed transmission. Your O/D gear is 4th,like mine is 5th on my manual. There's not even a need to turn it off during racing.

I think we all understand that O/D is just 4th gear but there is a difference when racing - at least quarter mile racing. I have done several passes at the track with it on and off and it is always faster with O/D off, but that is the only time I would have it off.

the overdrive band in the AOD-E/4R70W are weak from the factory so why use it anymore than you have to. I'm not even going to bother arguing with you guys because I dont really care what you do with your cars, I'm just explaining what could happen considering the facts.
