Funny Sound
Sorry guys if this has been covered, but the search feature doesn't seem to be working properly. Last week my car started making this hissing sound, almost sounded like air coming from somewhere. It's not constant just off and on but when it does make the sound it is the same tone all the time, only thing I can describe it as is hissing. It only seems to happen when the car is cold, when it warms up it goes away completely. I also inadvertantly figured out that the sound goes away when I put my foot on the clutch, and I dont even have to put it in all the way just push it in like a half an inch. Car shifts fine, no other noises when pushing the clutch in and no shifting issues, and like I said the noise completely goes away after the car is warm. I have a 2000 GT with a manual trans, I believe this is a tr3650 trans? Anyway, hopefully someone else has experienced this and knows what it could be. thanks in advance for any help. My mechanic says it could be a throwout bearing? But doesnt a throwout bearing sound more like a squealing or whirring? Also could mods please close the thread about this in the 4.6 General Discussion, just realised I had put up a thread in the wrong forum, thanks and sorry for the inconvenience

RE: Funny Sound
Its your TOB its getting ready to go. It will hiss for awhile and sound like air but its just hissing. In about a month it will start to chirp. Save up for a new clutch, not that you will need one but might as well throw one in while you have it all apart.

Thanks alot for the in put guys, not the news I was hoping for but the truth hurts sometimes lol. Well, how long do you figure I have before it completely craps out and what happens if I let it go to long? Will it be okay to store it for winter like this or should it be fixed before sitting that long, thanks again guys.

RE: Funny Sound
OK, sorry to bring this up again but I am still confused. I Talked to another mechanic today about getting my new clutch put in and he told me that it could't be the throw out bearing if the car is in neutral with footOFF the clutch making this noise, hes trying to tell me I need a complete tranny rebuild. He says that if it was the TOB it would make a noise when putting my footON the clutch. Is he trying to take advantage of a noob? This really sucks, I really need to learn more about cars.
