Default Modification Advice

I have an 03 GT. It's my first mustang. I'm looking for some advice on a logical order of enhancements. I've been doing some reading but I thought this would be a great place for some ideas.

depends on your finances. First thing I would do is yank your silencer and stick in a k&n filter, then replace your cat-back exhaust with something good, like magnaflow or magnapacks, then get some new rear-end gears, like 3.73 or 4.10's.

I'm truly a newbie so your patience is greatly appreciated. I follow the exhaust. Can you clarify the silencer and the k&amp;n filter replacement. Also, the gear I understand to a point......what will do?</P>

Thanks</P>

the silencer is a black snorkle-looking boot that is between your airbox and you fender. Your airbox holds your air filter. They can be found under your hood on the passenger side fender at the front of your car. Here is a how-to I found so you can have some pics:</P>

Also, on the gears... your stocks are 3.27's. I would use 4.10's on any 4.6 I would own, but some people prefer 3.73's. Basically, to sum it up, if you switch to a higher gear, then you will trade speed for acceleration. The thing is, on a Mustang 5th gear would take you to over 200mph, but you dont have enough power to climb over 150.</P>

Gears are perhaps THE largest performance mod you can do other than supercharging. Your car will drive totally different afterwards. The downside, the only one by the way, is interstate driving. With 3.27 gears on your mustang... at80mph on the interstate you would be at like 2100 rpm or so, with 4.10 gears you would be at 2900 rpm. So keep this in mind when you chose your gears.</P>

I'd start with exhaust work. Do headers &amp; exhaust...pretty much every aftermarket exhaust helps improve performance, but some companies simply way out-perform others. Check the exhaust &amp; appearance board for some of my posts regarding header selection &amp; muffler x/h-pipe information.</P>

Gears help greatly. They do not increase HP, but you will trade SPEED for accelleration, which at the track..is what we need.</P>

Keep in mind, if you go ahead and do 4.10 gears..don't be shocked to see much slower cars wax you from a 50-60mph roll.</P>

I have to be picky here for a second...switching to a LOWER gear will trade speed for acceleration. Lower gears are numerically higher, and vice versa, IE 4.10s are lower than 3.23s.</P>

Gears are definitely one of the best bang-for-your-buck upgrades for your car. Most gear sets are less than $200. If you plan any engine mods which will increase airflow, you should consider upgrading your exhaust first.</P><edited><editID>USAMuscle</editID><editDate>37892.009837963</editDate></edited>
