Default Can I run stock gears w/ stage 2 cams for a little?

Can I run stock gears with a stage 2 cam til I have enough money to get 4.10s? I changed my screen name on here and if anyone knows my motor is getting rebuilt cause it seized and I am going to have them put in stage 2 cams. I don't have the money to get gears right now but in a month or so I will so I was wondering if I could keep the stock gears til then?

i have 3.55s and cams and i have to slip the clutch nasty to get goin without stalling... not to mention if you are not reving super high your gonna fall out of your powerband enough to be slower than you would with stock cams.... So i say it depends on how long you plan on waitin, if its gonna be a few weeks or a month then go for it... if you are gonna put it off for a year its gonna be alot of bs to have to deal with on a daily driver and you will probly kill a clutch in the process...

I prolly won't have my car back for at least 3 weeks so I have that much time to save. I am selling my truck to pay for the motor and I don't think I will have enough left over to get gears installed. It will prolly only be for a few weeks anyway.

you probably CAN but gears will probably make a bigger difference on a bolt on car

slap some 4.10/4.30s in there

im not being a smartass or n e thing.. just curious
Why would you need shorter gears for a cam swap?

Becuase cams give you no low end power. Most of the time you'll stall. Zack (ZWGT) has stage 2 cams with stock gears right now. Havent heard him complain yet

+1 there is no reason not to drive it

gears will just get you there faster.

its not like you cams wont work with stock gears

Its going to run fine without them. They recommend the gear swap because it makes it much easier to get up into the powerband the new cams will have.

cams are going to reduce low end TQ, espcially off idle TQ, and increase top end horsepower. With less TQ down low it can be more difficult to get up into the RPM band you need, so a steeper gear helps out.

Running a 3.55 or even stock 3.27 should NOT be making you have to really slip the clutch hard etc etc with cams...something isn't right if this is going on. 3.73 is not that much more agressive than a 3.55 and I have no problems....

The theory is that when you get cams you have alot more top end power at the cost of low end tq, without torque down low you cant start rolling. Gears fix this problem by giving you more torque multiplication.

Edit:
lol i didnt refresh this page 4 like 10 miniutes, i guess my answer is a little late

3.73 to a 3.55 is a big difference..... i have had both back to back and would rather perfer the 3.73, when i was stock if i didnt powershift i would fall out my powerband enough to keep from a constant acceleration..... also half the time cams with no gears are gonna slow you down, because you fall back into the weak part of the powerband... the powerband with cams in these cars is not very linear at all, it ramps up super quick and goes from stock power to ***** to the wall in notime.
