Would changing from 235/40 to 255/40s get me better traction?

If you don't want/need to rotate your tires, get 275/40's for the rear, and run 245/45's up front. If you do want/need to rotate your tires, run at least 245's all the way around, 255's would work too.

I thought they came with 245/45/17s stock, not 245/40.Those 235s are to small and are probably pretty snug on the rim.I would go with a 245/45/17. Just remember if you put a 275 on the rear, you can't rotate your tires. Some people don't care about that and that's fine, but if you're like me, money doesn't come easy enough to buy tires every few months.Traction has more to do with the type of tire and what compund it's designed for rather than width. Some brands stick better than others, but usually don't last as long. So it's a toss up between hooking and longevity.I have had decent luck with Falkens. They hook OK, not like Nittos or anything, and last a while.

depends on what tire you get....i have fusions 245/45/17's and were kinda hard to spin then i put on a set of sumutos 275/35/17's and i would spin 1st and 2nd....i have g-force sports very good tire like them alot have to pop the clutch at around 2500 to spin

Traction does not have anything to due with tire width (at least on radial tires). You just need to get a softer tire like Stone629 says. I use BFG G-Force Sport, not the best traction, but a good compromise.
