Default "Service Engine Soon" light came on

I pulled the code and it read P0420. the trouble code said "Catalyst below threshhold on bank one" or somethig like that. i had a seriousexhaust leak on the passenger side and was wondering if maybe that could be the cause ?? BTW i did fix the leak just recently and havent tried clearing the code yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanx

Where exactly was the leak? I would definitely try clearing the code and see if by fixing the leak you solved the problem.

+1

Try clearing the code and see if it comes back on.
The exhaust leak could have been, and more than likely was the problem.

The leak is the problem. The leak is keeping the 02 sensor from getting totheoperatingvoltage (not warming up in time) in the time prescribed by the computer. Thecomputer give the 02 sensor a certain amount of time to get to normal operating temperature.

Usually this happens when people get longtube headers that relocate the front 02 sensors further downstream from the heads than the stock location. It takes longer for the 02s to warm up and give off the correct voltage. The computer reads the voltage on the 02s and see it as being incorrect. The computer then gives off a code and puts the car into limp-mode.

Reset the computer. If you still get the code, you probably still have the leak. If you have a chip or tuner, you can get a shop to extend the time the computer gives for the 02s to warm up.
