Default transmission swap

Newbie here. I posted this in the wrong forum....getting old! I have an 04 GT/5spd that I really enjoy. However, I am 60 years old and have developed arthritis in my knee and the shifting is starting to bother me. I would prefer not to trade my car for one with an automatic. My question/s....can this car be converted to an automatic and if so, would the 5sp auto of the 05 GT work or would I need to stick with the 04 auto tranny? Finally, since I don't have the mechanical expertise to do this myself, from a $$ standpoint would I be better off trading cars? Any advice/help/comments appreciated.

you can thow in a 4R70W, but it would cost a few thousand dollars. save the trouble and trade it in.

Thanks for the input. I figured that it would be somewhat expensive to do a swap....however, around here the 05 GT's are going for full list price plus additional dealer mark up. That would make it over $10 grand for me to trade for the 05 and that's not going to happen. I really like my 04 and it only has 7k miles on it....that's why I thought it would be less expensive to do the swap. In the meantime, I'll wrap the knee and grin and bear it. I'll check on the cost for the 4R70W conversion. Thanks again for the suggestions.

You should be able to swap to an auto for much less than the $10,000 difference you mentioned in prices.
Swapping in an auto is lots easier than doing the reverse if you ask me. you will need a new ECU to control the auto shifting I think, but not sure if the exisiting one can be reflashed for an auto instead of a manual. I would guess you could get this done for less than $5,000, maybe much less if you can find someone who wants to swap from an auto to a manual trans.

Thanks for the response roundman. I've been retired for 3 years and wish that I had more mechanical expertise as I do have time on my hands now. I'm checking into the swap cost now. The only other thing I have considered is to look for a used '04 GT with an automatic to trade for. I will also look into that. Thanks again for the input.
