RE: 02 gt u joints?
the u joint has nothing to do with the rear end leaking, unless its coming from the pinion seal, and then you have real problems that i would leave up to a shop. but if its from the cover then i would just pull the cover and check for metal shavings as well as check the wear pattern on the gears, if everything looks normal, and you have no strange noises while driving coming from there, i would just silicone it up real nice with some high temp gasket maker and check for leaks later on after that. make sure you add friction modifier!

Add it into the gear oil when you are refilling it, or you can get royal purple gear oil, i think it already has modifier in it. the modifier is to help quiet the clutches in the posi, without it our cars will sound chattery.

It's not a real problem. Pinion seals aren't hard to do. If your rear is leaking in the front by where the driveshaft is then you have to replace a pinion seal. Once your driveshaft is down (4 12mm 12point bolts), take off the yoke (1 bolt in the middle), and get a seal puller and pry out the old seal. To install the new one just bang it in. Make sure it sits flush against the housing. A little trick I picked up was using a stock tb. Our stock tb's are almost the perfect size. Get a piece of wood over the backside of it and hit it with a hammer until it's all of the way in. It works pretty sweet ... Make sure before you take it apart you mark where the driveshaft goes, mark the pinion nut to make sure you don't over tighten it, and make sure you get good gear fluid and modifier. Here's a link to what a seal puller looks like...

U-joints are a PIA on the stangs. They are press fit. I rented a Ball joint puller/installer to do mine! Big help otherwise you'll beat the crap out of everything including your knuckles.
I hate the idea of changing the seal out without ripping the entire rear end out and putting a new cruch collar in place. Once that crush collar is crushed, there's nothing that compares. Sure it can be torqued a little past the new point, but there;s really no proper measurement because the amount of resistance is with both axles a diff. carrier out! It's a cobb *** way to fix an annoying problem. If your seal is just getting wet and not leaving puddles, than I would leave it alone until you change your gears or get your diff rebuilt. that wet look will not hurt anything. And the mechanic is prob just seling the job to you.

You can replace pinion seals without having to put a new crush collar in . There's no problem with doing that. Just don't overtighten the bolt and crush the collar. This is why real techs measure turning torque after they're done. This makes sure you won't have any problems.
