Backpressure

RE: Backpressure
I can't help myself... I've got to.... I'm sorry.
No back pressure is the ideal, but.... Another aspect of exhaust flow is velocity. The goal is to keep exhaust gas velocityhigh with as little back pressure as possible.Exhaust gas velocityhelps scavange exhaust out of the cylinders and draw freash air/fuel in.High velocityis usually acomplished bycontrolingthe exhaust header/pipes diameter. When youreduce their diametersyou increase the velocity, butyou introduceback pressure. So as with most things, it's a balancing act between no/low back pressure and high exhaust gas velocity. Race enginesrun at near max rpm most the time create their own velocity so can be run with wide open exhaust. Street engine exhaust systems need to be designed with a little more thought.
