Dont directly touch the metal! Wont kill ya, but will scare the s#i+ out of you if you aren't expecting it... heck even if you are[8D]

Screwdriver method, you have the plastic handle, use it. Coil metod gloves and pliers should be enough.

Does it only get choppy and flash the CEL after its been running a while? Maybe also check the resistance in the spark plug wires, there should be no more than 10,000 per foot for a spark plug wire. Probably isn't the problem but might help cancel one more thing out.

no predetonation that I know of. Any easier way to test coils is to just put the screwdriver on the packs and you can hear them firing without unscrewing anything. Dont have any plug wires, so thats not it.
