Default Can you mod. the 4.6L v8

I just bought and 02 gt with the 4.6L v8. I've heard that since the 4.6 is a "throw-away" engine, that moding it would destroy the engine. I've also heard the opposite; that you have to build up the engine evenly. So how would go about moding it without destroying the engine. Also, is there any suggested maintence other than of couse oil changes and what not that are required or that are just overall wise to do.

i remember reading a few years ago that the 5.4 (similar technolagy) was one of the ten best engines ever

I dunno what you have herd but my engine seems to be holding up pretty good. I have had it for 2 years and it has gone through many shots of nitrous and has been supercharged for 15k at 10lbs and i run it pretty hard.

wow you've heard some pretty false statements, the 4.6L is very modable and a very very reliable engine.

if the engine is in a mustang its gonna have aftermarket value

afyer around 420ish+ rwhp they will start to have problems maby, but other then that u can bolt on whatever u want and it will run just fine for 100k and much more. maby u herd that they dont respond well to mods? or that they arent worth moding?

Do yourself a favor and never listen to the person that told you the 4.6 was a "throw away engine"
And how do build up an "engine evenly". Not to many people building up the Left side of the engine before the Right[8D]

I've heard that since the 4.6 is a "throw-away" engine, that moding it would destroy the engine.
i'd be willing to bet the person that told you this probably drives a z28 or ss camaro (if you're not a chevy guy yourself just trying to start crap, which is very possible), but either way they're completely wrong. there are a LOT of people on here pushing well over 400 rwhp on the stock bottom end. heads, cams, nitrous, blowers... that's what it takes to keep up with an LS1. too bad Ford didn't go with a larger engine in the Mustang, cause the 4.6 (pre-2005) has a nearly identical power-per-liter ratio asthe camaro ss, and a higher one than the standard z28. it's down on cubic inches, and doesn't respond well to bolt-ons, but put some aftermarket heads, cams, and a blower on it and you'll sh*t your pants the first time you stomp on the gas. basically, back in say... 2002... if you had to choose between a camaro ss and a mustang gt, you could buy the mustang gt, put a blower on it, put down MORE power than the ss, and still have spent about the same money to do it. plus you'd end up with a better looking car. i used to drive a '99 camaro and that thing was fugly...

It's possible the person you were talking to is horrible at communicating the point he wanted to get across to you.

MANY people have said, and a lot will agree, that the 4.6 (or at least the 2V version available from 96-04) is a 'throw your money away at' motor. They don't benefit greatly from small bolt-ons such as exhaust/intake work.

While that is true, a lot of those impressions come from what the car is being compared to, and that is usually older, larger displacement pushrod motors.

But as has been said above, it's probably in your best interest to not listen to anything else that person or persons tells you about the 4.6 family. The 4.6 motors might not be the most powerful motors in the domestic market, but they're certainly capable of lasting quite some time if maintained properly.

There really are not any super sercret maintenance tips either. Change the fluids on time, replace filters when necessary, and try not to beat the **** out of the cars every chance you get and they'll last 'forever'.
