Default tranny swap?

Hey guys, sorta new to this forum, seems like you give good advice though. Here's the deal, I've owned several mustangs, most 5 speeds, but then I went and bought an auto, less than a month ago. '98 GT to be exact. I'm not happy with the track times, with a best of 15.45, kinda hooking up on street tires. By the way, my '88 GT 5sp I just sold was running a second faster on hot days with only bbk headers on street tires, so I was not impressed with this. This other guy at the track with a '96, injectors, cold air intake, and slicks was in the 14.80's or so, is an auto really this bad? I figured it would be more consistant, but without hooking up (and being a daily driver), heck I might as well be driving what I'd like to (a 5-sp)! I just bought it, so I can't get rid of it w/o getting upside down, but I can modify it. I read this article on stangparts.net that they did a auto to 5sp swap in a 95, is it really this easy in a 98? What all do I need? Link me to a tutorial on it? I don't have much of a shop, and I could take it to some guys to do it for free, but I like to work on things myself, and I've been through mechanics anyway, so I'm not the biggest newb out there! Next step... blower?

Default RE: tranny swap?

Seeing as i've never done the swap myselfi cant get too specific, but you are correct it can be done and it shouldnt be too much different than on a 95. All the parts that need to be swapped will be the same, just ones to match your model and such

as a personall suggestion, if this is your daily driver and you plan on building it up with gas hogging mods you may want to consider the t-56 tranny not only is it tough as nails (version meant for the viper) but with that extra 6th gear it would be nice on the highway (just the downside of an extra shift in the 1/4)

I've heard the same about that trans, and it is the same as in the cobra too. But I don't think I'd have to worry about shifting into 6th in the 1/4! Any more advice on this subject would be great, anyone actually done this swap before?
