I'm also curious why people say 1st gear with 4.10's is useless. Does that mean you guys never put the car in 1st gear? i mean if it has no use why even put it in 1st?

Theoretical top speeds are not that far off from each other and are way more than you guys are stating.

If you have tires and setup that ballance a gear with that mechanical advantage gearing then they are great. If your car is bassically stock and you throw 4:10's your going to spin all day through 1st. 3:73's too, for that fact. Choose a good gear that you will be happy with driving everyday. If you want top speed then forge your motor with the best and internally ballance it.

The gear debate is way over rated.

I was planning on putting 4:10's in mine until I spoke with my mechanic last week. He has set up a couple of his own Mustangs, and told me that 3:73's are the best bet if you have to do any highway/interstate travel. I am still trying to decide weither to go with 3:73's or the 3:90's by Motive. There seems to be a lot of debate on this issue and it's too bad I don't know anyone with the different gears so I could test them out![:@]

I reccomend 3.73's if you plan on making any power in the future. no point in buying two rings and pinions.

The reason why, at least I think 1st is useless is because it becomes a very short gear and I spend most of it, if not all of it spinning which doesn't help any. I still need subframe connectors and I need to probably get a better tire too, but literally I drop the clutch in 1st and have to shift into second pretty much right away.

You guys need to stop beating this poor dead horse.LOL

4.10's are great for any kind of driving, its not your 4.10 gears or tires that make your lose traction its your crappy 4-link rear setup.Change it to a MM torque arm/panhard bar setup and you'll see.Trust me

My biggest complant isn't traction it's an extreme short 1st gear.

I like a short 1st gear.

More grunt to get it off the line.

And honestly, when you're racing.. does it matter how long your gears are if you're getting to a higher speed faster?

I love the 4.10's I have.....of course, I usually don't do much highway driving, the car is my summer toy, and I love tearing up the first couple gears off the line.

I've got 4:10s without drag tires and i hook just fine in first. i realize the setup is a bit different, but i still think you wouldnt be dissapointed with 4:10s. I'm sure 3:73s are great too but my vote is with the 4:10s

I have 4.30's and first gear does peel out alot. I love my 4.30's and my fuel economy skyrocketed .(in a good way surprisingly) I now get an average of 20 mpg. Before I had to do alot of coasting to get that kind of mileage now I just skip alot of gears.4.30's FTW; )
