motor wont turn
should the motor turn over with the timing chains off? If you read my last post the new motor we are putting in wont turn over. Its not the trq converter of flex plate. I thought the timing was off so I tore off the covers and its all right. I took the chains off and it turns half way around and no further. Im thinking something inside isnt allowing the crank to make a full turn over. What do yall think?

RE: motor wont turn
Have you tried kicking it...you should be able to crank the motor over with the chains off. But you say it moves a half turn then stops. Does it turn a half turn everytime you turn the key or just the first time you tried. If the motor is moving everytime start simple starter, battery, battery cables. If you go throughthe simple things and no change its further in the motor. Thats very hard to determine with out being there.

RE: motor wont turn
Its not the battery or starter..Both are good. First we thought the coverter wasnt in all the way so we checked and it was. The flexplate was on right not backwards so thats not it. Battery is new as well as the starter. We had the starter checked and its fine. When we tried to start it the first time the starter would hit the flywheel or flexplate and try to turn over but it wouldnt. So we yanked out the motor and took off the flexplate and timing chains and it will only turn over 1/2 way in both directions no further

RE: motor wont turn
If the cams and followers are still on it and the timing chains are removedthen it definately won't turn over because one of the pistons is hitting an open valve. The chains need to be on there and timed correctlyso the valves foreach individualcylinderare closed whenthatpiston gets to the top or bang, they hit. If this originally happened when cranking it with the starter there is a possibility that a valve got bent and is stuck open. One way to check this is to remove the cams, and using a straight edge, lay it across the tops of the valve stems, if one is a bit lower then the rest its probably bent and stuck in the open position hitting that piston, hope this helps and good luck.

the verdict is in...4 bent and 2 snapped valves..WTF.....The guy that timed it for me says he will replace the valves. repairing aint no biggy my family owns a machine shop so thats the problem right now that I can see there might be more
