Default From 89 to 87 Octane???

Will this hurt performance at all or have I been wasting my money on 89 octane all this time anyway??? Gas is $2.29 here, and I have a 20 mile commute to class 3 times a week. Any extra cash is helpful... Thanx guys!

Honestly, it probably won't hurt at all. but if you hear even the slightest hint of knocking, go back to higher octane.

If you're running stock compression and timing you're more than likely wasting alot of money burning anything but 87 octane. The key is to run as low an octane as you can without pinging or detonation. Yeah, yeah...I know..."but my car runs soooo much better, and has soooo much more power, on the expensive stuff..."[sm=loser.gif]

To increase the octane rating, refiners actually add stuff to their gas to slow down the burning process. This helps reduce the possiblity of pinging, spark knock or detonation in high compression engines, motors that have a more advanced timing curve or a blower.

Does a slower burn of the air/fuel mixture sound like it's going to add power? .....I don't think so.

if your timing is advanced, i would run the higher octane.

Get your tank way low...then get a gal or so of 87...drive ti around.. If you hear the dreadded pinging, go put some 93 in it to even it back out to 89/90ish.

i don't know from timing. but the 4.6 is designed to run on 87. i had the same question and looked in the owners manual and it says that it is meant to be run and will run best on 87. but mine is a 2000 so it might be differnet.
