Definatly do NOT trust the little BS cans at the autoparts store with refrigerant and a gauge! I tried one of them and its lucky I stopped when I did, drove to my fathers shop in IL, and had him check the system... it was way overcharged and would have torn up the compressor.

I had the same problem. It turned out that the wiring to the compressor was not plugged in because the plastic retaining clip was broken. It is a minor thing but definately check for that if the compressor is not coming on.
