White in oil?

White in oil?
I just added some oil after work today it was alittle low. And when I took the oil cap off it had some white oily substace on the inside of the cap and looked as though it had started to run in a small stream down the tube the cap goes into. I am assuming just condensation but I wanted to ask you guys and make sure. just mostly in the cap. I haven't changed the oil since november but I have only put lik 1200 miles on it since then. So please just tell me it's condensation and by wiping it out all is well!

Not normal on cars that ARE driven a lot.
For the latter, check the PCV system.

As "undecided" said, it is not normal on cars that are driven a lot--as in 10+ mile trips where the engine gets up to full operating temp and stays there for a while. That's why short "around town" driving only is considered to be severe service, especially in colder climates.

It might be normal if it's a small amount. The white oily stuff is a mixture of water and oil. It's never good to have water in your oil. If it is a very small amount, that's normal condensation, but this is also a sign of a blown head gasket. The easiest and best way to have peice of mind is to do a block test. Autozone rents the tool for free. You will have to buy a bottle of solution for the tool. It's about $7 and it's enough to do about 10 test. It's great to have on hand when buying a used car because it really sucks to buy a used car w/ a blown head gasket. (don't ask how I know). The test takes less than 2min and it's super easy. It test for exhaust gases in your coolant system, that's the sure fire way to know. Good luck.

So mine gets driven every day but i work 2 miles away. Maybe thats why i get the stuff because i dont have a long trip.
In the summer it goes away though because of the frequent out of town car shows.
