At the least, since the motor is already out, swap the rods and pistons for forged pieces. If you do some shopping around, you can find good deals on Probe or Diamond pistons and a good set of rods.

First off you need to stop being shy about money and tell us exactly what your budget is. You can find a Cobra crank for cheap in a junk yard. They're in some Lincoln, internet search to find out which ones have it. I know MMR sells a forged Cobra rotating assembly for about $1700. That includes a crank. Check out this post on a different forum. It's a discussion on rebuilding a 96 Cobra. All cobra guys want to forge when rebuilding. I can imaging 2v guys want the same since the stock cobra bottom end is only good for about 450hp, but it does have the forged crank. If a SC is ever in your plans, you need a forged bottom end. It seems a little boring because you don't see results in performance, but it's one of the most important upgrades on a stock modular engine. http://forums.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=990758 this is a link for a rotating assembly minus a crank for $739. It all depends on your budget, but DO NOT put that engine back together without forged internals, unless you want to do it again.

the rods i seen were made of 5140 forged steel i-beams, what i dont know is that is this product just a fancy new set of factory rods or is this actually a small upgrade? anyone know what the factory rods in 1998 were made of?? and if anyone has the time please go look at those rods on ebay and tell me what you think, just type in MUSTANG 4.6 RODS and it will bring it up.

Its gonna be a squeeze to do much on that budget. Start looking on ebay for deals on forged pistons and rods. The stock crank will be fine til past 500rwhp.

On that budget, I think the best thing you can do is find some used forged parts out of an 03-04 Cobra. Personally, I would save the money and wait until you can afford to do it right, if you don't it's going to cost you a lot more in the long run. Bare bone essentials are forged internals and a billet oil pump. I don't think you can do it on your budget though. The minimum I think it could be done for would be around the $900 range. Wait a little while and save. Surf forum classifieds, you might be able to find some good deals on parts and pull it off on your budget, and if you do, let us know I would be really interested if you can do it. Good luck.

the reason my budget is , what it is , is because im pretty sure i can do this for that amount, i didnt plan on changing my crank, it will be ok for my plans, but the rods and pistons on the other hand wont, and also i have to assume if i buy used rods or pistons then they must also go to the machine shop along with my block, which was in the plans anyway. so if the factory rods are powered metal then those rods on ebay must be a small upgrade, they say there good up to 650hp, but even if there not , i would think they may be good for my hp goals, and for the pistons well i havent even begun to search for those yet!
