RE: Lowering Question
Whether you're under the car or not, jackstands SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED!!! Don't forget, that if the car drops, you're going to smash a whole bunch of suspension components, your brake rotor, and body panels if the jack decides to let go while it's in the air.. On top of that, when you do springs, unless you've got powers that are beyond the normal person, you would need to get in the wheel wells at least a little, and for the rear, your arms will be under the car for a bit...
Safety shouldn't be an option..
As for the fronts, you can do it similarly as it was mentioned for the rears, although you'll need to definitely support the car, and have a friend nearby, since the front control arms will only lower enough for you to wiggle the springs.. You'll need someone to lean on the control arm to extend the spring further, and someone to get in there and wiggle it to get it out...
THAT'S ONLY IF..... You don't use a spring compressor.. You'll want to have a jack under the control arm to slowly decompress the spring as it bottoms out...

Sears floor jack hydraulic unit just blew a seal and that was it.
I didn't notice until I went to jack the car up a little more and discovered it wouldn't go.
Always, always use a jack stand under the car.
A $20 jack stand just might save your life.
