Default Broken Mounts???

Im starting to think that either my tranny or motor mounts are broken, i get a clunk noise any time i am in gear and let off the gas and then get on it again or from a start depressing the clutch and changing gears. my question is, how hard is it to tell if they are actually broken? are these things that can easily be replaced without too much work?

Could be your U joints....

These trannys are very "clunky" anyway.

Put your car in gear and try to turn your driveshaft. Is there alot of play in it?

When i checked that the last time i had it up in the air, it didnt look like anything out of the normal, i only have like 35K miles on my car, so im having a really hard time believing its the u-joints. all though my car is lowered, so that probably changed the pinion angle and could cause them to wear out faster. am i right?

Well, changing pinion angle could affect the tranny mount as well.. A good way to tell, IIRC, is when looking at the tranny mount, there's normally a little gap in the middle of the mount, to allow for flex.. If the rubber has deteriorated, the center will be compressed, or flush with the bottom of the mount.. Get the front of the car up in the air a little, and put a jack under the back of the tranny housing, and jack it up a little.. Watch the mount, and if you see it separate into 2 pieces, you'll know right away what I mean, that's your culprit..

You can also visibly see the engine mounts, although slightly obscured.. There should be a nice piece of rubber that's not squished or cracked.. If you so a similar jacking of the front of the engine, with a piece of wood between the jack and the oil pan, you should see most of the front of the car lift, and not one particular side of the engine lifting..

How hard do you beat on your car?? U-joints can last 100k miles or 10k miles for a variety of reasons... If you can get the drive shaft off, move the pinions and see if there's any lateral movement or clicking.... Don't forget to index the pinion flange for correct re-installation alignment..

If you're talking engine mounts, I'd say go urethane, since they tend to last longer, can take more abuse, and help transmit more power to the ground (although it's negligible)... As for the tranny mount, why not?? At least where I'm at, you can only get the tranny mount from Ford, and it cost somewhere around $130 + some tax.. I think the urethane one is a little bit more, and can be found on Ebay, as I'm not sure who makes them since I haven't been parts searching for over a year now...
