Some 99-00 GT's came with 16" wheels. 17" was an option in those years. They looked like this:

Wasn't there a GT that came with a 16? or am I thinking of NPI GT's?

reguardless point proven not all gt's had 17x9's. and 17x9 look fine in the front, if anything you want wider on the back.
and no it doesnt matter how wide your tire is it only matters how tall it is (for the speedo)

no matter what the number its not wide enough... is it true that if you get a wider tire or wider rim that you need to recalabrate the speedo?

directly no
indirectly it may. you have to get a wider tire than what you had before and if you don't match the profile size correctly and end up with a tire with a bigger sidewall then yes.

RE: How wide are stock Wheels
If you go from a 17x8 and run 245/45/17 and then switch to a 17x10 or something and run a 295/45/17 the sidewall profile will be alot larger and in turn make the tire "taller"
thats the only point i was making.
