Default RE: rack and pinion bushing

I have a similar problem, just waiting on the parts to get here. Check out this TSB and consider replacing the steering gear tube brackets. http://www.paladinmicro.com/PalMFrame00.htm?wks=rak

I didn't want to replace the rubber with rubber so I went with urethane. I ordered Energy Suspension bushings for my 02 GT vert. You want part number: 410103(R) The (R) is for Red. I think there is also a black part available.

I bought the bushings from Pep Boys for $12 but it was a special order item.

If you remove the "tube bracket" on both sides as described on my DIY Fix page (the above link) there will be enough room to get the rear bushing out without loosening or disconnecting anything else--it's tight but it can be done without a lot of hassle...

sorry to beat the topic so much, just wanna do it right....you're saying i can swap the bushings without disconnecting my outer tie rods and all that, just jack it up, unbolt that bolt, slide the tube out, replace bushings, slide tube back in, reconnect bolts?

Yes, on the driver's side you'll have to shift the rack upwards (it will move forward when you push it upward) to get the rear bushing out--I did not replace the bushings when I did mine, however I did have both front and rear bushings out...

If there's a Harbor Freight store near you they have 3-ton jackstands on sale all the time (the regular price is pretty low) thay also have some decent floor jacks for $60 or so (the steel ones). I have one of their 2-1/4 ton steel jacks I've had fornearly 15years, it was $30 when I bought mine. You will need jackstands to do the rack bushings safely, the floor jack will make things a lot easier (if the floor jack won't fit under the front cross member use the OEM jack to pick the car up a bit).If you want to buy one floor jack that will last the rest of your life, get this puppy. I've had mine for4-1/2 years, it isa crackerjack jack...
