my passenger side inner tie rod needs replaced, is this something i can easily do in my garage on a jack or would it be better to pay our family mechanic to do it for me on his lift?

RE: inner tie rod
you can do it at home. it will take less than 30 min. jack it up. take the wheel off. then brake the nut loose on the outer tie rod. then turn the rod untill it comes out of the outer. count the threads so you can put it back on there at about that point but you will need to align it afterwards anyways. then take off the boot on the rack and pinion. then it may have set screws or a cotter pin as holding it on. then break it loose with a wrench and it just turns off like a nut. oh make sure you have the wheels turned towards passenger side all the way that way it sticks out of the rack.

RE: inner tie rod
yes im positive, ive had 2 people who have worked on cars for 30+ years tell me its the inner tie rod.....we checked the ball jointwith a prybar between the tire and the lift while it was lifted (drive on lift was raised, then the arms were extended and the car was lifted off the drive on) everything was working properly, if you grab the tire you can move it back and forth like the wheel is turning, without moving the other side....the base of my inner tie rod is loose and has play....like i said, first my family mechanic noticed it in december and said it was loose and i ignored it, then i had an ase certified teacher who has been running his own shop for 20 years look at it and he also says its the inner tie rod...its for a suspension and steering class, we put the car on the lift and checked every single suspension and steering component....i need a new inner tie rod and a new bushing on my steering rack ....also, there is no play moving the tire up and down, so its not a wheel bearing

RE: inner tie rod
you wont need it for a mustang. just a big wrench or a cresent wrench. for other cars like hondas with the rack behind the motor where there isnt room, that is where you need that tool. heh.
