Anyone know the cause of this?

How about some obvious questions like.....

How much gas did you have in the gas tank?? A common issue with a OE gas tank, is there isn't any baffling to keep the fuel from sloshing away from the pick up.. If you DON'T have a fuel tank (rather a fuel cell), then my guess is that you just managed to loose fuel pressure long enough to stall the car out..

But my guess is that you have a standard gas tank, and you were a little low on gas.... It's a fairly commoncause for cutting outon most street configured cars doing things like AutoX or Road Courses..

Oh wow. Sorry for the late response, finals at school sucked up life. Anyways, to try and answer all your questions:

1. I had a full tank of gas. We were in a road rallye and I always fill up beforehand because they can be long, about 100 miles. This happened in the middle of the rallye.
2. No check engine lights came on, it just died.
3. The Bosch plugs came recommended, I always do a bit of research before I put something in my car, but maybe I looked in all the wrong places. I had these plugs in for 5 months prior to the incident, so I don't think that's the problem.
4. I know why my steering stiffened up, I was just giving all the details of the experience.
5. It wasn't a shifting issue, I had the clutch pushed in when it died.

I'll check the IAC and battery. Anymore ideas let me know. I'd let you know if the fixing the IAC does anything, but can't be for certain. It's not exactly a recurring problem.

I would be willing to bet that it was the IAC, too.

Good luck, and let us know the outcome.

dont clean the iac--replace it. I would almost bet you $50 thats your problem (even if that isn't it, iac's on 4.6s should be replaced every 50k anyway)

I cleaned out the IAC. There wasn't a lot to clean out, it looked in decent shape. And I forgot to mention that I have about 40k miles on the car. When the car died, it didn't sputter either. At first I didn't realize it had died because my lights were still on. But only a moment passed until I figured what had happened (no sound from the engine)and just started it up again. But anyways, the IAC is clean, TB/Plenum is clean, and my air filter is clean. If I hit this problem again I'll let you know. Now all I gotta do is wait...

Something about the IAC being the culprit still doesn't sit right with me, especially with only 40k on the engine.. I wonder if your power steering may have had something to contribute to this?? I'm still not sure though..

I dont know, i had to clean out my IAC at about 45k miles. Mine would start and not hold an idle. It only died once while i was pulling out of a parking spot. Buts since then i have 75 k miles and has never died again. Did your idle ever drop hard down to like 300rpms and then comeback? Sometimes thats a good indicator.
