Default Stock Manifolds vs. Shorty Headers w/ Kenne Bell

New to the forum, looking for some input.

Long story short, stock motor is blown, forged long block is on the way. I have a KB 1.7L, planning on running 12lbs of boost, probably looking at about 425 at the wheels. Here's the question, since the motor is out, I can easily get headers put on. I am not interested in long tubes, too much trouble with emissions and parts clearance. Are shorty's worth it. I know on N/A they see very little gains. I hear the stock manifolds flow pretty good, which is why shorty's don't gain much. I'm wondering if it's worth it on my set up, for some power, or just to help get some heat out of the motor? Thanks.

When my car was stock,(execpt for a 70 mm t/b, cai, and cat-back)I put BBK equal length shorties on. I dynoed before and after on a Mustang dyno and it was a gain of 6 rwhp. Most of the gains were on the top end. With f/i it should be more. Where did you get the K/B 1.7. They haven't made those for 2 or 3 years. The 2.1 replaced the 1.7.

I've had it for about 3 years. 9lb intercooled. Just blew the motor a month ago.

That explains it. Do you want to get rid of your 9 lb pulley?

Might as well get at least shorty's since the motor is gonna be out anyways. Your not gonna see much HP gain, but you'll gain a few. You should read KBs tech articles about how little gains they showed after header installs on their test cars. Might sway you one way or the other. If nothing else their articles are a good read and you can learn quite a bit about your car and what parts those blowers like.

We'll see once I get the work done. Takes 4 - 6 weeks on the motor. I need to the pulley on to drive it to the shop......on 7 pistons. You'll need the intercooler to step up to 9lbs. Well worth it. I started out with 6lbs. Went from 325/320 to 373/370.

Once my tax stimulus rebate check gets deposited, I'm ordering the i/c and either a 9 or 10 lb pulley.

Not a great story. The heater core hose blew, dumped coolant all over the motor. Plugs were shot, coils were shot. Somewhere in the middle of all that #5 piston ended up with a hole in it. I'm guessing it didn't get sufficient spark or the spark timing got screwed up and it detonated. Ran perfect for 10K miles before this.
