I just recently replaced my rear end and it only cost me $350 (of course I did the labor). I found a used rear end of a 96 GT with aftermarket 4.10's with only 60,000 on it.

i mean the fact that its loud enough for you to hear while casually driving may mean its shot already, but did you try checking the diff fluid?? if its pretty dry in there, you may just need to flush, fill, and add friction modifier. after about 500-1000 or so miles, the noise should almost completely go away if your clutch packs are still good. how many miles do you have on the car??

if this is a v6, disreguard and sell the car. Upgrade to 4.10's, 31splines, and rebuild kit, and find a guy who does these things on the side with a reputation. Save you 1000 bucks. parts for these aren't insane, labor is.
