How restrictive are the stock catback pipes?
Currently i have the stock exhaust manifolds, a pypes catted X pipe, and stock catback pipes with weld in flowmaster 40's mufflers.
Half of the guys in the car club are tellin me that the mufflers and stock piping are making my exhaust pretty restrictrive, and they recommend a catback as my next mod.
The other half say that its not worth the money. And that its really not going to make much of a difference.
Who's right? I like the sound of my car, but i like magnapacks too. Stock pipes are half an inch in diameter narrower than the magnapacks.

they're 1/4 of an inch narrower.
2.25 to 2.5 ;-)
It's up to you. If you want to spend the cash on a magnapack catback because you like the sound, then yes, it will be worth it.
If you're looking for a bit more power, save your cash.
I would be willing to bet that if your car was dynod 5 times as it sits now, the average would read within 1-2 hp of the average after you swapped in a catback.
(I did the stupid average thing because it's possible you could get a freak reading the second time and i'd lose the bet )

Ah, 1/4 inch, sorry about that.
Still, even 1/4 inch, over however many feet the piping for the catback is, is quite a bit of volume that could helpthe exhaust flow freer. idfk...

Get the catback. you have a bigger mid pipe, you invested money in your car, why the hell would you run stock pipe size? In the import scene, only the rice burners swap in mufflers with stock piping. But we're not the import scene[8D]
I think you will gain HP..not worth the cost of the catback, but still, it would bother me that im runing stock pipe size with a mid pipe. Mods add up. If it were a factory mid pipe with weld in flows, i may feel diffrent but i think it would really bother me to run a bigger midpipe and choke the exhaust halfway out.

I already have a better flowing midpipe. Its just the catback that im contemplating switching. I did an exhaust vid a few days back, and i kinda heard the popping and burbling when i let off the gas, sounded kinda muffled/suppressed.

I was gonna say just dump it at themidpipe but 99-04's have the spaces for the mufflers in the bumper so it might not look as good as it would on a SN95
