Default New Mustang Owner Questions

Hi,
I found a 1997 Mustang GT that I expect to pick up tonight. Unfortuently it has 210,000 miles but it was the right price and it has been very well maintained so I am not too nervous. You should have seen the look on my dads face when he found out how big the engine was, he thought I was getting a six, anyway as soon as i get it I will post up some pics.
I have a few questions that I have used the handy search button for but have come up a little short.

First was as soon as it is paid off I am going to put a set of 4.10 gears in. Is there any step by step instructional like the one OXfordGT made for the engine rebuild? Also I have heard mixed results about fixing the speedo, can this year be fixed with the 23 tooth gear or can it be fixed electronically? or is it just better to invest in a GPS speedo?

Also is there any work that I should do right away in terms of the high milage to hopefully turn back the clock a little bit?

I have access to a full auto shop and machine shop but no high rise lifts so can the gear work still be done?

And last: what would be the first mods I should do to realize real HP gains not just the intake and exhaust "gains"?

Thanks so much!

Man, I hate to say it like this, but I'm going to.

Not that 200K+ miles won't last a while longer, I would just be hesitant to put money into more modifications other than exhaust on such a high mileage car.

Having said that, there's not really any special maintenance you can do. Just make sure you're on top of oil changes, that the regular fluids are where they should be etc.... basic maintenance.

Someone will have a link to a step by step ring and pinion installation for you. It's not something I would do myself, but if you're brave, go for it. though, I'm not sure how not having any kind of lift will work out for ya.

Good luck, and if you you don't ming, what'd you pay?

oh yea, welcome!

no I was really amazed and he commutes everyday on the highway so I am not too nervous about the miles. Also i comes with a set of new rims too, although I have a feeling its because of something bad happening to the first set because he does not still have them

I just had my gears installed. I bought the kit from americanmuscle.com. It come with the speedcal and gear oil. The speedcal is great for fixing the speedometer. Mine is dead on. I just had to call Dallas Mustang to get the updated codes for it.

I would not mod the engine if i were you. Its hard to say how long it would last. i would just buy a used 99-04 4.6 you can get them at an affordable price and they are better engines than the early 90's 4.6

How much did the gear install run you at the shop?

Hmmm that is a thought just replacing the whole engine, is the wiring harness and ecu the same between the two generations?
