tranny out of sdjustment? or is it toast.

In short, I went to the track power shifting the whole way down, and missed third, like halfway into gear and dropped the clutch at 6200rpms. Now if i really hold the shifter in third, it will go in somewhat, but if i shift normal it will grind and spit it back out of gear. The reason why im wondering if its out of adjustment is because when going into 3rd, there is a dead spot, about and inch of throw where it feels like neutral, then a little bit where it feels like it goes into gear. Any ideas?

If you are lucky you broke the plastic glide bushing on the shift ball at the lower end of the shift leverotherwise you probablybent/broke the 3rd/4th gear shift fork.Does it go into 4th OK?

When I did that to my tranny, 2nd gear though, I shifted like that at about 6200rmps, I completely distroyed the syncro(however it's spelled can't think right now) and when the tranny was opened up it looked like a pencil sharper full of shavings only brass though. I heard a rumor that these trannys shouldn't be shifted too much over 6 grand, their just not made for it.Plus, you could probably get away with shifting at about 5500, most cars with bolt ons and tune usaully start dropping off their power band by then anyway.

fourth gear still goes in fine. how accssesible is this bushing? and i did drain the fluid, to find it was loaded with goldish pencil shavings as stated.

You just need to pull the shifter (as though you were installing a aftermarket short-throw unit), the plastic glide bushing snaps onto the end of the shift lever...Here it is installed (moved from the OEM shifter) on my MGW shifter, sounds like you may have bigger problems though...http://www.paladinmicro.com/images/MGWShifter-002.jpg
